Superintendent Maine, Rhonda Oskman and SandyPines CEO

Riverbend Academy students can walk around in new socks and shoes, thanks to the support of their teachers and the generosity of the community.

In March 2024, Riverbend Academy hosted a Socks and Crocs event, where donated brand-new socks and Crocs were given to each student. This event came to fruition after Ms. Rhonda Oksman, a teacher at Riverbend Academy, wanted to provide something special for these students who resided at SandyPines Residential Treatment Center.

Ms. Oksman reached out to the community for support with this effort, and Keith “Fletch” Fletcher, the CEO and President of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Martin County, answered the call.

Thanks to Mr. Fletch, every student at Riverbend Academy received socks and shoes they could call their own. He donated enough to provide socks and Crocs to several new students as they entered SandyPines.

The donation day was made extra special with the presence of Superintendent Michael Maine, School Board Chair Jennifer Russell, Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services Dr. Lisa Estevez, Joe Flanigan and Mr. Fletch with the Boys and Girls Clubs, SandyPines leaders, and the Bobcat mascot, all of whom joined Riverbend teachers in the effort to distribute the footwear.

Ms. Oksman hopes to collect more donations, so each student begins their journey with a brand-new pair of socks and shoes, ensuring every child feels supported and comfortable from day one.
