FNS employees earn three FNSA awards

The Martin County School District is proud to announce that three outstanding Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) employees have been recognized with awards from the Florida School Nutrition Association (FSNA). These awards highlight the exceptional creativity, dedication, and service these team members bring to their roles in supporting student nutrition.

Each year, FSNA honors school nutrition professionals across the state in various categories, celebrating their contributions to student health and well-being. This year, Martin County’s FNS team earned an impressive three of the ten statewide awards!

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the following awardees:

  • Christy Cole, Citrus Grove Elementary – Super School Award (Elementary): Christy Cole was recognized for her innovative approach to promoting National School Lunch Week (NSLW) during the 2023-2024 school year. Her creativity shined through fun, engaging videos and use of vibrant graphics to share NSLW highlights with not just Citrus Grove Elementary families, but the entire District community. In addition, she transformed the cafeteria with eye-catching decorations and organized activities to encourage more students to participate in the lunch program.

  • Maryellen Burgos, South Fork High School – Smart Start Award (Secondary): Maryellen Burgos earned this award for her dynamic promotions during National School Breakfast Week (NSBW). Throughout the week, she hosted fun contests, with the grand prize being an underwater polarized camera, to drive student engagement in the breakfast program. Burgos went the extra mile by incorporating a beach-themed décor, making the food visually appealing, and having her staff dress in theme. Beyond NSBW, Maryellen made a significant impact by advocating for donations to cover student meal debt through the School Lunch Fairy program.

  • Thomas Gallagher, Martin County School District – Community Humanitarian Award: Thomas Gallagher’s commitment to the District extends far beyond his job responsibilities, making him a well-deserving recipient of the Community Humanitarian Award. Responsible for maintaining over a thousand pieces of equipment across 26 locations, Thomas ensures everything operates safely and efficiently. But his kindness doesn’t stop there—whether it’s helping coworkers with personal maintenance projects outside of work, assisting during emergencies, or lending a hand when someone has a flat tire, Thomas is always there to help, doing so with an infectious smile.

We are incredibly proud to have Christy, Maryellen, and Thomas as part of the Martin County School District family. Their dedication and contributions have a lasting impact on the students, staff, and community they serve.
