Literacy Teacher of the Year- Mary Jarrell

Ms. Mary Jarrell, a first-grade teacher at Warfield Elementary School, has been named the Martin County School District's (MCSD) 2024 Literacy Teacher of the Year.

The Florida Literacy Association's K-12 Literacy Teacher of the Year Award recognizes outstanding educators who have made significant contributions to reading and literacy instruction. This year, the Martin County School District proudly nominated Ms. Jarrell for this prestigious honor. Her unwavering passion for literacy, her ability to foster growth in students' reading skills, and her commitment to advancing both student and teacher success at Warfield Elementary make her truly deserving of this recognition.

Ms. Jarrell takes a dynamic approach to advancing literacy education at Warfield Elementary. She leads impactful professional development sessions, mentors her colleagues, and introduces innovative strategies to elevate literacy instruction campus-wide. In her classroom, she utilizes evidence-based practices to tailor instruction to the diverse needs of her students, ensuring that every child—especially struggling readers—has the tools and support needed to succeed.

Principal Cristina Smith says Ms. Jarrell’s classroom is the embodiment of effective literacy instruction.

“Her instructional practices are not only aligned with best practices but also infused with creativity, intentionality, and a deep understanding of her students' needs.” Ms. Smith shared. “She uses data-driven approaches to guide her teaching, ensuring that every student progresses in their literacy journey.”

Ms. Jarrell's name and nomination packet have been submitted to the Florida Literacy Association for consideration in the statewide competition. The statewide winner will be announced in January.
