retiree insurance

The Martin County School District would like to inform active employees and retirees about proposed changes to retiree health insurance contributions.

These updates were discussed at the Martin County School Board meeting on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, during the first reading of Board Policy 6560 - Retiree Health Insurance. The next step for this Policy is a Public Hearing and Final Adoption scheduled for the March 25, 2025 School Board Meeting.

No Changes for Current Retirees

The School Board voted to maintain retiree health insurance contributions at their current levels, which have remained unchanged since the policy's implementation in 2015.

  • Current retirees will continue to receiving the same level of health insurance contributions until they turn 65 years old.

  • Upon turning 65 years old, retirees will receive the Martin County School District Health Insurance Subsidy, determined by years of service under the existing policy.

  • Current retirees currently receiving the Martin County School District Health Insurance Subsidy will continue at the same level.

  • No changes will be made to the current retiree health insurance contributions for those already retired.

For Active Employees Retiring on or before June 30, 2025

The School Board voted to maintain retiree health insurance contributions at their current levels for these active employees retiring on or before June 30, 2025, which have remained unchanged since the policy's implementation in 2015.

  • District contributions toward retiree health insurance will continue unchanged at the same level of contributions until they turn 65 years old.

  • Upon turning 65 years old, retirees will receive the Martin County School District Health Insurance Subsidy determined by years of service under the existing policy.

  • Retirees over the age of 65 years old will receive the Martin County School District Health Insurance Subsidy at the same unchanged level.

  • Active employees retiring on or before June 30, 2025 will receive health insurance contributions as those already retired.

A final reading for the above proposed changed is scheduled for the Board Meeting on March 25, 2025.

At the Martin County School Board meeting on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the Board discussed the CURRENT EMPLOYEES not retiring on or before June 30, 2025. The next steps for this process are Attorney Review, First Reading and Advertising Approval, then a Public Hearing and Final Adoption - which aims for completion before June 2025.

Direction was given by the Board for those retiring on or after July 1, 2025 as follows:

  • Martin County School District contributions toward retiree health insurance will remain in place at the same level of current contributions for retirees under 65 years old until June 30, 2038. After this date, contributions will end.

  • The Martin County School District Health Insurance Subsidy will no longer be available for employees retiring on or after July 1, 2025.

The State of Florida Health Insurance Subsidy (recently increased from $5 monthly per year of service up to 30 years to $7.50 monthly per year of service up to 30 years) will continue to be administered and specified by the State of Florida.

These proposed changes affecting employees retiring on or after July 1, 2025 are being incorporated into a proposed policy by the District's attorneys. These proposed changes are being scheduled for a First Reading and Advertising Approval at the April School Board Meeting, with a Public Hearing and Final Adoption scheduled for the May School Board Meeting.
