The official school newspaper of Martin County High School, The Tiger Times, has officially made its return! After a hiatus, the beloved publication is back with its first edition of the 2024-2025 school year, thanks to the dedicated efforts of two ambitious students: Julia Murphy and Ian Hodges.
A Fresh Start for a Classic Tradition
The Tiger Times has long been a cherished tradition at MCHS, offering students, staff, and parents a window into school life, from academic achievements to athletic victories and everything in between. However, the newspaper had been on pause for some time—until Julia and Ian stepped up to revive it.
Their mission was clear: bring back a platform for students to share their stories, express themselves, and stay connected to what’s happening around campus. The new edition is packed with diverse content, from coverage of school events and student achievements to features on sports teams, clubs, and more. It's a reflection of what students care about and a celebration of the entire school community.
A Student-Driven Publication
The return of The Tiger Times marks a significant shift toward a fully student-driven publication. Julia and Ian, along with a small team of fellow students, have taken full ownership of the newspaper’s content, design, and direction. Each issue is created by students for students, ensuring that the newspaper captures the spirit, creativity, and voices of the MCHS community.
In this first edition, readers will find features on various aspects of school life, including spotlights on student artists, athletes, and leaders. The Tiger Times provides a space for students to express their perspectives on issues that matter to them, while also celebrating the diversity of talent and experience within the school. This isn’t just a newspaper—it’s a showcase of student creativity, journalism, and leadership.
Student Artwork and Guest Writers
One of the exciting aspects of the revived Tiger Times is the showcasing of student artwork. The newspaper serves as a creative platform for MCHS artists to display their work, whether it's visual art, photography, or digital designs. The first edition features a student-made cartoon. More artwork will be featured in upcoming issues.
Additionally, The Tiger Times welcomes guest writers from across the school. Whether you’re a passionate writer, a member of a student club, or someone with a story to share, there’s a place for your voice in the newspaper. The editorial team encourages students to contribute articles, op-eds, and creative pieces, making the publication a truly collaborative effort.
The Future of The Tiger Times
The Tiger Times is set to be a dynamic and evolving publication that reflects the interests, creativity, and talents of the students at Martin County High School. The publication is a platform for all students to have their voices heard and to celebrate the things that make MCHS such a unique and vibrant place.
