PAWS & PBIS
Palm City Elementary is pursuing character development vigorously. We believe that children should be taught behavioral skills such as composure, encouragement, assertiveness, choices, empathy, positive intent, and consequences. To do that we utilize several different programs and merge them together to meet the needs of our students and community. At PCE, we believe that using Character Counts, Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Restorative Practices, and Conscious Discipline will help us to provide a well-rounded behavioral and mental-wellness program to our students.
We believe that productive struggle leads to growth. Well-meaning as we all have been, we now know from research that the message we are sending to our children when we swoop in to save them from innocent mistakes, such as bringing things they have forgotten at home, is that they are not capable of solving their own problems. It is much more effective if we work together to build self-worth in our children. Self-worth is directly related to successful problem solving. The productive struggle is growth. This event is our opportunity to teach your child that he/she can handle this problem. Research shows that experiencing natural consequences is a powerful motivator to learning new skills. By working with us to (gently) administer them to your child; we can use an unfortunate event to teach essential life lessons. These are our opportunities to teach the Character Counts! pillars of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, and Citizenship. It will be a challenge, but we will be showing your child that he/she can handle this. We are all in this together.
