Did you know the Martin County School District has invited local judges and attorneys to celebrate Constitution Week with us for nearly 20 years?
Today, we visited 19th Judicial Circuit Judge Kathleen Roberts at Port Salerno Elementary School and 19th Judicial Circuit Judge Darren Steele at Indiantown Middle School as they talked to students about the Constitution.
Judge Roberts played a game with the students to help them differentiate the three branches of government. Judge Steele focused on the Bill of Rights and related the freedom of speech to a very important message about the use of social media.

🎉CELEBRATING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT🎉
Three Martin County School District students have been named Semifinalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program!
Over 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.
Approximately 16,000 students were selected as semifinalists in this year's competition. Finalists will be announced in the spring of 2024.

🇺🇸CELEBRATE FREEDOM WEEK🇺🇸
The Florida Legislature has designated the last full week in September as "Celebrate Freedom Week." During this special week, the Martin County School District will proudly incorporate meaningful activities and lessons to reinforce the principles our nation was founded on. 🇺🇸📖
Celebrate Freedom Week highlights the significance of the Declaration of Independence. Through our social studies classes, students will participate in an age-appropriate in-depth student of the intent, meaning and importance of the Declaration of Independence. Each morning throughout the week, students will recite the following words of the Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
Families that do not wish to have their child participate in the oral recitation of the Declaration of Independence must provide written notice to their school no later than Friday morning, September 22.

🇺🇸CELEBRATING CONSTITUTION WEEK🇺🇸
The first 10 amendments to the Constitution were ratified together in 1791, and are called collectively the Bill of Rights.
Students at Pinewood Elementary learned about the Bill of Rights today from Judge Alan Forst, of the Fourth District of Appeals Court in Florida.
At Felix A. Williams Elementary, students voted to make all Mondays an optional school day as they discovered more about the Constitution and how a bill becomes law. Jon Eberst and Donna Demarchi from the Eberst Law Firm taught this fun lesson!
J.D. Parker Elementary School students explored the differences between the three branches of government with Erin Kirkwood from Erin Kirkwood Law.
It's been a great first day so far celebrating the 236th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution!

On Thursday, Sept. 14, more than 75 new teachers and 40 Martin Mentors came together for a night of team building and learning during MCSD Professional Learning Department's first New Teacher and Martin Mentor Professional Learning session of the 23-24 school year!
New teachers completed a self-assessment to help their mentors set goals with them for success. Our mentors, who have 248 years of experience together, learned the most effective ways to support and mentor new teachers.
Our Professional Learning team is excited to host even more new educators at the next session!

🛤️RAIL SAFETY WEEK🛤️
Sept. 18-22 is Rail Safety Week, and with GoBrightline starting service from Miami to Orlando on Friday, this is an opportune time to remind families how to be safe near railroad crossings.
🚅 Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists should be aware that rail traffic runs in both directions.
🚅 Stay off the tracks and NEVER go around crossing gates.
🚅 Only cross the railroad at a designated crossing.
🚅 NEVER stop on the tracks.
🚅 Avoid distractions.
Brightline trains can travel up to 110 mph. With service starting to Orlando, more high-speed trains will be passing through Martin County.

Shout-out to Mr. Mark Cowles (Coordinator of Art, Music, Physical Education, Social Studies and World Languages), Mr. Terrell Mabins and all of our Financial Literacy teachers who came together to provide this comprehensive approach to educating students about financial principles.
We are enthusiastic about the future of this program! We currently offer this instruction to freshmen, as it is required per Florida law, but we plan to expand to other grade levels in the coming school years. Stay tuned!

Superintendent Michael Maine and Assistant Superintendent of Academics Troy LaBarbara are attending the Florida Association of District School Superintendents’ Fall Leadership Conference in Orlando this week. Mr. Maine and Mr. LaBarbara have enjoyed participating in many professional learning sessions while networking with other Florida superintendents.
“It is wonderful to be able to come together with our colleagues from around the state for collaborative learning,” Superintendent Maine shared. “There are so many amazing efforts and initiatives taking place throughout the state, all for the benefit of students. 🎶🇺🇸UNITY THROUGH MUSIC🇺🇸🎶
Martin County High School's OPUS Choir sang beautifully during Monday's September 11th Tribute at the Cummings Library in Palm City. It was a heartfelt tribute to those we lost on that fateful day and the brave men and women who ran straight ahead in an attempt to save lives 22 years ago.
The power of music to bring us together and heal our hearts was on full display as the OPUS choir sang their hearts out. Listen in as their harmonious melodies remind us of the strength and resilience that unites us as a nation. 🇺🇸🎶

🟫FUDGE FUNDAMENTALS🟫
Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School students in Ms. Armstead's Culinary Career and Technical Education are baking up a storm!
All in one class period, students learned how to bake box brownies from start to finish, including the prep, bake, and clean up! They also reviewed their work by discussing how well they worked as a team, what worked and didn't work, and how they could improve. Of course, part of that process was sampling the final product! 😋
The students also took their skills to the next level by packaging their brownies in goody bags for families attending Curriculum Night!
Fun fact: Ms. Armstead was one of our cafeteria managers who started with the District as a food service substitute before becoming a ctemartin teacher!

📚MEETING NEW READING BUDDIES📚
While visiting Port Salerno Elementary School yesterday, School Board Member Amy Pritchett (District 4) met her new reading crew!
Ms. Pritchett will be volunteering once a week, reading with this wonderful group in Ms. Davis's first-grade class. Yesterday, they read about sea turtles and how people can help protect them! 🐢
