** Update - 2:20 p.m.: Thursday, September 26 - The Martin County School District is pleased to announce that all schools and district offices will reopen on Friday, September 27, 2024. After carefully assessing the weather conditions and consulting with local emergency management officials, it has been determined that it is safe to resume normal operations.
While we were forecasted to experience frequent high wind speeds, we are fortunate that our area appears to have been spared from the worst of the potential impact of this extremely powerful storm.It is important for students to return to class on Friday, as learning continues and attendance is essential to their success. Our teachers and staff are ready to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for all students as we return to our regular schedule.
The district encourages all families to ensure their students attend school on Friday and to reach out to their schools if they need assistance or have any concerns.
** Update - 12 p.m.: Wednesday, September 25 - All District-operated schools and facilities will close Thursday, September 26 due to the forecasted impact of Hurricane Helene. According to the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials, wind speeds throughout Thursday morning are projected to exceed limits for bus operation, making it unsafe for transportation. The Martin County School District will continue to work with local emergency management officials to track the storm and provide further information regarding District operations beyond Thursday as it becomes available.
** Update - 9 a.m.: Wednesday, September 25 - All afterschool activities, including clubs, tutoring, and athletics, are canceled today and tomorrow.
Extended Day will remain open today only.
The MCSD College Fair has also been canceled and will be rescheduled.
** Update - 5:04 a.m.: Wednesday, September 25 - Martin County has now been entered into a tropical storm warning for Helene by the National Weather Service.
** Update - 5:06 p.m.: Tuesday, September 24 - Martin County has been entered into a tropical storm watch for Helene by the National Weather Service.
As the Martin County School District continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff, we are actively monitoring Helene, currently forming in the Gulf of Mexico. While forecasts are still developing, our district is prepared to respond to any potential impacts.
The safety of our students, employees and families is paramount. Any time severe weather has the potential to impact our area, the District works closely with national, state, and county management officials, including the Martin County Emergency Operations Center, to determine how operations may be impacted. We will continue to monitor the path of the storm and will provide updates as needed through our mass notification (callout/text) system, website and social media channels.
We encourage all families to review their emergency plans and ensure they are prepared for any disruptions.
At this time, all school operations will continue as scheduled. However, we are prepared to adjust our plans as needed based on the storm’s trajectory. Should there be any changes to school schedules or closures, we will notify families as soon as possible.
